Dawid Mod, Artist/Developer
Hello Heroes.
We will be doing a profile on our BF Heroes team members every two weeks, starting today.
Dawid was the lucky one, so he got to be interviewed by K4Ge first.
We hope you enjoy the read.
Who are you?
Hey, my name is Dawid Mod
Where are you from?
I’m from Sweden. I grew up in a village called Sävar, about 650km north of Stockholm.
A lot of my time as a teenager was dedicated to art. I often sat in my room making crazy drawings or doing paintings.
In high school and two years after high school I studied art and art history. It wasn’t until university that I discovered the sweet taste of computer graphics and 3D.
I spent a year at the University of Luleå in Skellefteå learning 3D.
This was in 2000 - 2001. The year after, May 2002, I began my career here at DICE.
What do you do on heroes?
I’m an artist creating vehicles, weapons and level art.
Also, I’m working with our talented outsourcing artists, giving them feedback on their work.
What’s your favorite heroes aspect?
I love to dress up my little heroes. Nothing girly about that, at all. It´s just so much fun either to make them look really, really cool or really stupid.
I’m also a fly-boy. I love to sweep over the battlefield, select a target and take them out with my left wing, ahhhhh.
What’s your favorite class and why?
That would be Soldier. I find pleasure in taking enemies out with hand grenades and TNT.
What is the best about being a dev/artist?
Having a creative job is very important for me. I need to think and take a lot of decisions every day in my job. Also I can see my art in a game. How sweet is that?
How did you become a dev/artist?
A friend and I from my years at art school were chatting one day. He started to talk about his new job as a 3D artist, making cars for Midtown madness 3.
“..yeah, it´s really fun! The company is called DICE. They did the pinball games and a couple of rally games. You should send in your stuff (drawings, 3D models) and see if you can get a job here.” So I did. A couple of days later I sat on a plane on my way down to Gothenburg for my first work interview ever. The week after that was my first day at work at DICE. Back then I was sitting in an office with around 50 people, now we are more than 200 in one office.
What did you do before Dice?
I’m still in my first Job, so Dice is where I started, many years ago.
What other games have you worked on?
I’ve worked on:
Rallisport PC
Battlefield 2: Modern combat
Battlefield 2
and on
Battlefield 2142
What other games do you like?
CounterStrike is a great fps, love it. Deadspace, great, scary game.
Skate, I´m an old skater and this is the closest you can get to skating without breaking a sweat... Tetris, Kula world and other puzzle games. Well, a lot of different games I guess :)
What’s your all-time favorite game?
I would have to say CounterStrike
Who or what is your favorite band/music?
Isolation Years, a great, great band. You should all check them out.
What do you do in your spare time?
I play some games when I have time. Poker is also a big interest, on-line and live.
But most important will always be my family. My wife and my two kids.
What’s your weirdest hobby?
When I was somewhere between 8 and 11 years I collected stones, any stone that I thought looked cool or just ok or was small enough to carry home.
I also collected license plate numbers, from all cars and wrote it down on paper. Is that weird or just stupid?
What would you say, is your nerdiest apparel?
I don´t have any nerdy apparel. But the nerdiest I know is the tourist belt bag thing you have on your stomach, in leather. Nerd.
If you could be a game character, you would be… ?
Sonic, he looks happy and is very fast.
