Not sure how GIMP works, but I'm pretty sure GIMP also works with layers as in PhotoShop. You need to make several layers; one for your mugshot, one for the background, one for the lettertype and so on. Now if you want a transparant background, just remove it. Save your sig as a png file, and voila!

if u use gimp and you try to edit a picture thats not a .xcf its merged into 1 layer
