Battlefield Heroes™

Nailing the Look Feb 14

Hello Heroes,

Ben Cousins
Ben Cousins, Senior Producer

Ben Cousins here again, Senior Producer on Battlefield Heroes™. As I mentioned in my first entry, rather than tell you where we are now with the development of the game, I’m using this blog to tell the story of how we made Battlefield Heroes, starting at the very beginning.

Last time, I talked about how the project began at DICE - my work with Lead Designer James Salt on creating the high concept for the game. The next important stage of development is to set the visual style or ‘Art Direction’ for the game. The best person to create your art direction is of course an Art Director…

Gustav Tilleby has been at DICE for many years now, having created art on Midtown Madness 3, Battlefield Vietnam, Battlefield 2, Special Forces, Battlefield Modern Combat, Battlefield 2142 and Northern Strike — quite a resume. As the Art Director, it’s his job to create and enforce the visual style for every aspect of the user experience, from the website to the menus and the game itself, right down to individual elements like crates or blades of grass. A good Art Director has a sense of the overall ‘big picture’ but also the attention to detail required to keep tabs every element of the artwork, no matter how small.

When approaching Gustav about the visual style for Battlefield Heroes there were a few things that I had in mind:

  1. We need to differentiate Battlefield Heroes from our very successful current games — Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142
  2. Battlefield Heroes absolutely isn’t Battlefield 3, so we need to reinforce that fact with our visual style
  3. This is a game about creating, customizing and leveling up your own unique over-the-top war hero
  4. We want to clearly communicate the fact that this game is about FUN
  5. Our graphics need to look awesome on a high-end PC, but still look good on a low-end laptop

Early Character Concept Art
Early Character Concept Art

Since Sean Decker (the Battlefield Franchise Executive Producer) had mentioned the idea of war heroes in our first meeting, I had been thinking about the Commando comic books I used to read as a child. These comics were full of over-the-top heroes doing amazing super-human deeds, and they had simple comic-book art-style. I also spoke to Lars Gustavsson, the DICE studio Creative Director, and he mentioned to me an idea he had while working on Battlefield 1942 – he imagined a ‘toon’ Battlefield game, where a direct hit with a tank shell would just leave a pair of smoking boots on the ground. DICE’s games have a long history of stylized graphics, with Codename Eagle’s cartoon characters, the bright fun colors of Midtown Madness 3, and Battlefield 1942’s style which was influenced by the very same WWII comics I’d read as a boy. Given these directions, I set Gustav to work.

Gustav started creating character visualizations for feedback. The first set of images were something like a WWII version of the British cartoon pop band Gorillaz – extremely cool looking but I felt a little too left-field and childish looking. Eventually we settled on something which had a direct link back to ‘Red’ the hero in the ‘pre-Battlefield’ game, Codename Eagle.

Early Environment Concept Art
Early Environment Concept Art

Once we had the characters nailed we started thinking about settings - Gustav was keen to move away from the dark, gritty, somewhat depressing feel of modern shooters and he and the team’s concept artist, Robert Sammelin began to work on images of idyllic Mediterranean environments with blue waves lapping up against white beaches framed by towering, impossible cliffs.

As Gustav and his team worked on this art style in the early phases of the project, we knew that there was a chance we could be compared to the small but well known group of PC shooters that have separated themselves from the standard realistic style with a cartoon look – most notably Monolith’s No One Lives Forever, Ubisoft’s XIII and Valve’s Team Fortress 2. We decide we would ignore the possibility of these comparisons and go with the style we believed in as a team — a style that fulfilled all the objectives I have detailed above.

After all, the alternative would have meant that Battlefield Heroes was yet another realistic WW2-style shooter. How original would that have been?

Next time — character classes and the 3rd person issue…

I’m looking forward to this game so much! I’m one of the very few that has been playing BF42 since the demo came out years ago. We felt it was the best in the series and even with the newer games we still fall back to the original. Now, I’m not sure where to post suggestions regarding this Heroes so I’ll post it here and hope for the best.

Would it be possible to include an in-game clock linked to the time on the user’s computer?

I’ve had many nights where I lost complete track of time while staring at the screen and end up going to bed much later than planned. It wouldn’t have to be anything significant and could have an option to turn it off (or on). Maybe something small in one of the upper corners. Personally, I’m surprised more games haven’t included something simple like this.

“A preview of the upcoming game will be here soon!”

Come on, give us a trailer! The definition for “soon” is a few days, max a week. I think you are a little overdue. I’ll even settle for a teaser, although I hate them even more than having nothing. I just need my fix, come on! I no you have what I need! Please, doc… just one shot of herojuice is all I need.

I EVEN DID NOT LIKE THE FUTURIST IDEA OF 2142, BUT I FEEL THAT BATTLEFIED HEROES IS GOING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN!

AL THE GOOD THINGS WILL BE COMBINED IN THIS NEXT GEN GAME!
SHORT GAMEPLAY(10-15 min), FUN, REALISTIC… BRING IT ON!!!

Very, *very* interesting concept. Could put the fun back into gaming. But please beware the trap that killed the MOO and NWN series of games - fun is the only thing that matters, what developers want to build is quite irrelevant. :-)

I presume that with a summer release and an upcoming exclusive that must be already in print, this project must be fairly mature by now.

how far are you from beta release stage? and respecting a low entry level for hardware, to what degree can the detail be ramped up? *cough* *cough* quad core/8800gts *cough* *cough*

I would like to thank Ben Cousins and the entire staff of Battlefield Heroes for sharing us the info development to BFH. And of course thanks for pointing out that “Bafflefield Heroes” is NOT “Battlefield 3″. This blog really give me a sense that EA, DICE and the developer of BFH are not hiding something. So keep posting developer blogs to informed the people on what you are doing!

I also agree with “llDayo” comment #3. I think that Battlefield Heroes should have a in-game clock or timer linked to the time on the user’s computer. Here are some reason why we should include a in-game clock or timer.
    1. To keep track on the time you play the game.
    2. Also to keep track of the time that you need to get a specific award.
    3. This will also benefit the parents that might be watching over there kids under the age 12 or 16. Lets face it people under the specific “age rating” in a game will play it anyway.

I would also like to thank Gustav Tilleby for helping Battlefield Heroes in drawing fun cartoon base characters! Keep up the Great work and make your dreams come true!

PS: Add numbers to prevous comment.

    Many thanks! Don177

One addition that I would like to see is some credit being given to high ranking players from BF2 & BF 2142 games, could be managed if u can apply to use the same persistence account name. The credit could include a weapon unlock that is restricted, a vehicle unlock that is otherwise restricted or a rank upgrade for those players who have reached top rank in the previous BF2 or BF2142 games. To my mind this will pull in your BF & 2142 players who rightly deserve a reward for many hours played on your games. A pat on the back from the developer would be a real nice touch, and may serve to give additional market life cycle to your previous excellent titles. Have a think about it. Thanks

If it’s in 3rd person, does that mean we’ll FINALLY get to fly and aim our fighter plane guns from 3rd person? Not even Codename Eagle gave us that luxury.

And if you’re worried that people will want 1st person, why not just have both? Star Wars: Battlefront did it flawlessly, after all. BF could learn a bit from it’s AI, too…

It’s looking pretty darn good, guys. Very impressed. Especially with the fact that you’re releasing the base game for free. Also very impressed that you’re keeping it accessible to gamers with lower end machines. Expanding the market. I like that.

About the look. Comparing the visual style of the 3 titles you quoted, you have to admit that it looks extremely similar to Team Fortress 2. I’ve noticed more and more games in development are taking up this visual style.

Don’t take the flak that other gamers give you about “copying”. Mimicry is the greatest form of flattery, and Valve should be proud that other people are adopting their style.

Very excited to see how this game will look and feel. You might want to also think about porting this over to consoles as well. Maybe make a single/multiplayer game for all major consoles (and please don’t forget Wii). Beat Valve to the punch.

I realize you can do that but the amount of coding that it would take to implement would be small plus, as was mentioned earlier, other features could be added to it like how much time needed until a new ranking or something. Maybe even an alarm clock option that would light the time red when preset to a certain time.

I don’t mind the idea of slower planes (as long as you mean bf42’s plane speed, which was just about perfect) but what’s this rumour I hear about no bombs? At what point while playing CE or BF did you think removing the bombs would improve the experience? Planes play a precious small part in the outcome of battles as it is, and if you take the bombs away then…what’s the point? It’s like a sub without torpedoes or a tank with no cannon. For pete’s sake keep those bombs in there- planes aren’t much fun if you can’t give those pesky AA guns and tanks what for when they pepper you with flak and bullets…

Love the look. It is a welcome change where gameplay, design and style outweigh “killer graphics”. I would agree with others that a first-person view would be best.

I read the article in Games for Windows magizine, and you guys need to add first person. It would be a good shooter in 3RD person, but its not really Battlefield unless it has 1ST person

As a BF42 vet, i think that fitting in the option of first person view is essential to making an impact with this game. I understand the desire of wanting to make it accessible with general gamers, but leaving out an aspect of the game that has been a part of the series since the beginning will only alienate the people that are most looking forward to this series.

If this is gonna be third person, im NOT playing even if is really free (which it probably wont be free) like ” I Wear a watch” siad-

” Not third person please, third person is bloody awful”
if its first person, ill test it. and if ya think bout it, it would be sacreligous :) to have it in third person.

I don’t like that fact that it will take a 10 bullets in the chest or 2 shots to the head to kill someone. I will surely give it try.

I just read the cover story on Games for Windows magazine about BF Heroes and as an owner of all three previous versions, I was very excited about this new direction. It sounds like DICE is playing with some very cool new concepts. Then, in the last 2 paragraph, they dropped the bomb - third person only!

    ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

This is not just a camera angle change, it’s a genre change! I was SO excited about the newest version of one of the best FPS games of all time, now I don’t even care to try it, even for free. I know the developers are spooked by the dismal sales of Crysis, but that had to do with its outrageous hardware requirements, not the FPS aspect. The worst FPS is still more marketable than the best third person “tactical” game (I refuse to call them shooters).

Guys, do you REALLY think that seeing our own characters and taunts once or twice a match is really worth throwing away the ENTIRE gaming experience and playability? Having other players see our “upgrades” is what counts, and you could easily “zoom out” to show our characters for a half-second during a taunt if its really that important to you. At the VERY least, give us the option. Is it more work for you? Absolutely. But the alternative is that you exchange one fanbase (your current one) for a new fanbase - the “new players” you believe are terrified of FPS games. You know, those casual gamers that will NEVER bother to get into it enough to spend money on extras. By eliminating first person, you are eliminating the very audience you need to make a concept like this work.

How in the **** did this get past marketing? I could not be more disappointed, and practically everyone I know that plays FPSs with me just laughed and wrote you guys off when I told them this. Most don’t even care to come here and give their opinions at this point.

I’m sorry to say, until you guys put down the crack pipe and change you minds on the genre of game you’re making, I have no intention of playing Laura Croft: Heroes.

    Thanks for your time.

Actually if there are going to be cliffs and ledges, it would be cool if there could be a climbing feature. Looks good, but make 2 different sort of maps, like tight one and wide ones, like that people who want some messy action can go on the tighter map whereas if the want a map that is more tactically demanding, they can go on a wider one.

One small suggestion, and Im almost certain all pilots of flying vehicles would agree on this, it would be nice if the nose camera view was first in the cycle vs cockpit and then nose cam. For people that enjoy changing their camera angles, we must always find workarounds. If it is too late for Heroes, this would most certainly be sweet for BF3!!! Thanks

I very much like the conecpt
but has anyone noticed similar the cartoony soldier is to the innate quirkyness of team fortress 2.
not saying its a bad thing TF2 is amazing but heroes will have to go one better.

and also i agree with the ingame clock
something simple like you get on EVE online or something.

im gonna keep an eye on this to see if this lives up to the rest of battlefield reputation

    Catch ya next time, Matty

Viral, if you had read some of the other development diaries, you would have noticed that they will add a 1st person view along with the 3rd person one. Let me also remind you that this is a game that some little 10 year old will be playing, so they want the views to appeal to a younger generation.

Frankly 1st or 3rd person shooters don’t bother me.

I completely agree with Haki79.. an optional first person view is absolutely essential if you don’t want to alienate a HUGE chunk of potential players and fans. Let the player decide which view they want.

    Recommend:

    1. People, BUY A WATCH… THEY’RE LIKE 5 BUCKS…

    2. Climb ability or grappling hook tool. All that great terrain and cool buildings with people only running around on the ground with no way to get to higher ground or rooftops would be LAME.

    3. Customization needs to be more than hats, belts, and gun color. THIS IS NOT BARBIE, PEOPLE. Please make the customization more substantial than Barbie dress-up! Blech! Who let the mmorpg Fashion Bug into the dev meeting?!? Think character SKILLS and weapon SPECIAL EFFECTS for customization, NOT costume design. Seriously. If I want to spend hard-earned experience points just to get a different colored outfit, I’ll go play Guild Wars. Makes my stomach turn just thinking about it…

    4. Don’t listen to the TF2 haters. To Ben’s point, if they just did another FPS, that would have been a ‘ripoff’ of other similar fps shooters, and no one whines about that.

    5. FPS option is highly desired.

    Thanks for listening!!!

Hi Ben and other ppl related to BFH.
Its my first request/recommendation. I can see BF Heroes is being anticipated my many ppl. Also, u said that play 4 free is used to give popularity to it in west. Promotion is done in almost every country of America and EU. But i want u to promote it in Asia also especially here in India. India is also emerging as big gaming industry. So u should look for Asia also. Beside Japan and China, India and other countries also need attention of EA(and other companies). Just promote BF Heroes here also-simple :D

I remember another cartoony game I had a blast with, that was General Chaos for the Sega Genesis. I rented that game for like months straight when I was a kid. If you havn’t seen it you guys should check it out, it’s definately old school but it’s really fun, especially multiplayer.
